All symptoms of yeast infections are caused by the overgrowth of the yeast species Candida on your skin or in your G.I. tract. Candida is naturally found on all humans, whether you are a baby, man, women or the elderly. Candida is on your skin right now but you don't know it because bacteria and other factors are keeping its growth in check. Basically if you are healthy, then the Candida will not overgrow and produce symptoms of yeast infection.
Yeast like to live and grow in very specific conditions as they like warm and moist places. Some areas that typically can develop yeast infections include skin folds, the underarms, genitals, the mouth and behind the knees and elbows. Babies tend to develop symptoms of yeast infection under their diapers. The most common yeast infections are nail bed infections, vaginal yeast infections, thrush or mouth yeast infections and diaper rash.
As you get older your chances of developing a yeast infection are higher. In the elderly most symptoms of yeast infections show up in nail beds, skin folds and dentures. The worst type of yeast infection you can get from Candida is a systemic disease that will spread throughout your body. Systemic Candida yeast infections can present more serious medical complications down the road, so it is important to be aware of signs that you may have a more serious problem then you standard yeast infection.
There are many causes of a yeast infection though the similarity of all causes is the fact that the environment on or in your body changes to promote yeast growth. By taking steroids or antibiotics your body's chemistry changes promoting yeast growth. Also those that have a weakened immune system will be more susceptible to yeast infections. In this case a yeast infection may be a sign that you have an immune disease, as your body cannot fight off the extra yeast growth.
Some symptoms of vaginal yeast infections include itching, irritation and a white discharge. Sometime there is burning with urination or pain associated with sexual intercourse. Thrush or an oral yeast infection appears as white patches on the tongue and in the mouth. These white patches tend to be surrounded in red. Thrush is painful and can make eating difficult.
Yeast infections that occur inside the body and occur because of a weakened immune system can cause problems with the function of those infected organs as well as pain. You can even get a yeast infection in the blood stream and this is very dangerous as it then has the potential to spread to the brain which can cause brain damage and impair brain function.
For yeast infections on your skin and nail beds, there are many over the counter medications that will quickly and easily treat the infection. If you are using over the counter medication, and it is not having any effect, you should visit your doctor. Also, thrush requires antifungals, which need to be prescribed by a doctor. If your yeast infection keeps coming back, then you may have other health issues and should see an experienced Candida doctor immediately.
Systemic yeast infections need to be treated in a hospital and you need to try and strengthen your immune system. For those that have severe thrush they may be dehydrated or have nutrient deficiency and this may require a hospital stay if it is severe. Yeast infections that are coupled with fever, vomiting, abdominal pain or chills then you may have a kidney yeast infection or other problems.
There are many symptoms of yeast infections that both men and women can show and the best way for finding a cure is to find a doctor who has had experience successfully treating patients who have had Candida and yeast infections. As a general warning, be cautious if the doctor wants to prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics to treat symptoms of yeast infections as these will likely only make matters worse.
