Weight Loss & Exercise

by Dr Martin Russell

If there is an Olympics for being overweight, then Australia all around would be the gold medal winner!

A 2008 Study entitled "Australia's Future Fat Bomb" found that 26% of Australians are clinically obese (Body Mass Index >30 i.e. considerably obese.) The US ran slightly further back at 25%. The Report also showed that 7 out of 10 middle-aged males, and 6 out of 10 middle-aged women are obese (i.e. BMI >25.) This truly is an epidemic!

According to the Report Summary... "Fortunately, weight loss can be accomplished via life-style modifications for example improved physical activity and dietary modifications."

This message is being spread out into the community at large, in federal government health programs, on Television, by the media and it's now ingrained within the extremely fabric of Australian contemporary society. But we're still becoming fatter!

Even worse, if you really verify the medically researched evidence you discover that "exercise more, consume great things, eliminate the poor stuff" solutions do not work. It's might seem unbelievable, but that's what the evidence shows.

Very first of all, moving more, aka exercise, isn't a good fat loss method. That may appear amazing to numerous people, but that is not theory. The authoritative Cochrane Collaboration summary from the analysis on"exercise for the overweight is damning. It says workout is excellent for several issues, such as living longer and feeling physically and mentally far better, but it only offers an average of one kilogram of weight reduction. I've never had a patient consult me to aid them shed a 'mere' one kilogram - and nonetheless they still turn to exercise.

Secondly, simply cutting back on what you eat or avoiding particular foods, i.e. dieting, is flawed as well. Dieting succeeds long phrase for less than 10% from the population. For most individuals, dieting is more likely to cause fat Gain within the long-run. Any fat lost appears to come back again more than time, and with a small bit extra. This is the so-called yo-yo dieting impact. Study following study on everything from surgery, to pills, to well-known diet plan applications, shows the same anti-gravity pattern. Weight that goes down, a lot more often than not merely comes back again up. That was my knowledge as a family doctor.

What I came to realize is the fact that this 'good advice', and all my medical advice, was incorrect. Nonetheless even for those that think they've tried and failed at seemingly every technique there is info about why you haven't succeeded, and what you are able to do instead.
