Communication is indeed a tool that can be very powerful. This can be illustrated in the case of conversational hypnosis. Conversational hypnosis is a process wherein a person's initial perception is altered with regards to the problem that is being faced.
This will have to be done through the interaction of the hypnotist and the patient.
The first step in conversational hypnosis is the affinity. This happens early on during the session. The hypnotist has to relay to the patient that he understands exactly the patient's predicament.
This is all aimed at establishing a kind of rapport.
Take for example we have a case of an agoraphobic person. This person has an inexplicable fear of crowds and the hypnotist is trying to coax him out of that situation. When the patient tells the hypnotist that "it is hard", the hypnotist should reply with something along the lines of "I know it is hard".
After the hypnotist has established rapport with the patient, they can now delve deeper into the process of conversational hypnosis through distraction.
This is done so that the patient can let go of his problem for a minute and unwittingly explore the idea of different solutions.
To follow through with the example I made before, in order for the hypnotist to distract the patient, he can ask something along the lines of "what do you think it would be like if you lived all alone on this planet?"
Although the question may not be logical but it is effective in distracting the patient.
Once the patient has his mind off his problem, the hypnotist can start suggesting different ideas and thoughts that lead to the solution of the problem.
Like the hypnotist can start telling the patient what life would be like if he started getting comfortable with people.
