People have been a popular topic for numerous prize-winning photos from time to time. Still, portrait photography isn't only about photographing a face. It is also about making a person or many persons come alive within the picture by showing them at their greatest.
A good portrait picture achieves a non-conventional aspect by freezing the subject from a unique camera angle and in a mood that is representative of the subject. However, portrait photographs are also clicked in the conventional style with a single person or the entire family as subjects, and these mostly find their place in family albums.
The most significant aspect in a portrait image is the close shot, and the face of the subject must come out sharply in it. This is achieved by a time-tested camera trick of turning the background slightly hazy and indistinct so that the subject's face gets the maximum focus. A bigger aperture used in a camera can give ideal results for this purpose. Whereas, when both the individual and the background are important, like an image taken with the subject in a scenic landscape, then a normal aperture is advisable.
Photography is all about falling of light into the photographic medium; thus inadequate light has always been a photographer's cause of worry. But a good portrait photograph is easier to take if certain ground rules are followed. One of the ways is to make the subject sit near the window such that the light entering from it falls on only part of the face. A reflective surface can be used to highlight the other side of the subject's face. However, Studio lighting can also be tuned to suit the light needs for high quality portrait photographs, and therefore many photographers prefer to shoot such photographs within the confines of studios.
Another important factor that affects a portrait photograph is the comfort level of the subject when he or she poses for the image. If the subject doesn't feel at ease while being shot and doesn't give a natural expression, then even the highest quality camera and lighting technology can not ensure a good portrait.
