If you are considering a career in a dental practice, then there a number of roles which you could conisder that go beyond the well known roles of the dentist. All the roles available will see you in a position that is well respected, client facing, flexible and well paid.
The Dentist
Obviously this is the best known dental role. A dentist's duty is to work with their patients in the prevention and treatment of oral disease, amending irregulaties of the teeth and gums and treating dentistry related injuries.
The Dental Nurse Role
A dental nurse will work alongside the dentist in their every day duties. This will primiarily involve assisting the dentist whilst they carries out their work, by preparing instruments and dental materials, as well as looking after the patients and making sure they are comfortable during their treatment.
Depending on the practice, the dental nurse will also carry out admin work and provide assistance in reception.
Dental Hygienist
A dental hygienist will carry out the treatment of existing dental issues, generally via scaling and polishing a patients teeth whilst giving them advice on how to best look after their teeth in the future by offering tips on cleaning and flossing. In doing so they look to give the patient the best chance of maintaining a healthy set of gums and teeth moving forward.
The Orthodontist
An orthodontist's role will see them focus on how to alter a patients bite in order to regulate the amount of pressue they apply on their teeth. This will be done by straightening out and moving misaligned teeth in order to not only improve their function but also their appearance. This work will be carried out by producing bespoke braces.
Dental Technician
The role of the dental technician is to make the bespoke patient treatments as perscribed by the dentist who examined them. They will use materials such as plastic, porcelain and gold in order to build crowns, braces, bridges and dentures.
