Hypnosis – Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It

by Sarah Cox

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. People either believe them to be falling in the domain of the occult, or don't consider them to be serious scientific endeavours. Some of the popular misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the truth behind them are discussed here.

Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. Psychology and the other sciences have an important role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants successfully experiencing its power in public sessions. They believe that the subjects who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Even people with strong will power can fall under the spell of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

Another false belief about hypnosis that people have invented arbitrarily is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized person is fully alert of what is going on around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down entirely and is thus able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.

Some scientific discoveries have claimed that only about 5% of the population is suitable to be hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. Researchers have come up with this low percentage because they have made use of the identical hypnosis technique on all people without focusing on their individual traits. People differ in their natures and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis methods to fit the temperaments of different individuals.

Meditation and hypnosis are often thought to be the same by people. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has nothing to do with communication. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, while the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.

A majority of people believe that it is not possible to bring about alterations in one's looks and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. However, it can guide the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating less, and quitting smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of inspiration in a person.

Undergoing hypnotherapy is a fine way to lead a happy and satisfying life, and hence one must not pay attention to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sittings with an unbiased mind.
