The meaning of wisdom can be arbitrary from person to person and culture to culture. The basic principles relate to the why and how of life. Learning from others and life experience contribute to becoming wise. When people are faced with a given situation and must make a choice, it is seen as wise to take into consideration perception about people in general, things, and life experiences.
To the ancient Greeks, wisdom was considered a virtue and was synonymous with insight. It was taught that when making decisions it was important to take discretion when it came to emotions. Wise choices were a product of reasoning and insight.
As in most circumstances, not every piece of information is available to us when faced with making a decision. A wise choice is made by putting all of the available pieces of knowledge together. Aristotle believed that wisdom was derived from understanding the causes of why things occur or why they exist.
On the other hand, Freethinkers believed that intuition played a large role in contributing to helping to make right choices. They also thought that spirituality had a part in developing this virtue. Like Aristotle, some Freethinkers agreed with the idea that reason and experience were the backbone of wise decisions.
Today, colleges and universities are considered the place where one gains intellect. Concepts are taught and in conjunction with life experience, one may become all the wiser. This is also done by comparing and contrasting what one has learned to experience and prior knowledge. A smart individual will be able to survey all of the option and make the best choice.
Many people see a direct relationship between age and being wise. The old man who has lived a long life and seen many things usually has the upper hand when it comes to decision making. However, this isn't always the case. A young man who has traveled and has had many rich experiences could be considered wiser than an old man who has lived a sheltered life.
Experience, knowledge, perception, insight, and reason are the basis of wisdom. With these also comes intellect. As long as choices are made for the better of a person or a situation, they can be thought of as wise decisions.
