Fashionable men and women had the clutch purse, and it radiated status symbol, especially on the type of purse one was seen to be holding. Young girls were even taught to learn embroidery, to make sure they are considered a 'prize catch' if they knew how to embroider, and this was during the classical period of the states and English time period.
Nowadays, bags can be a fashion statement, they could be a status symbol, and there is generally no gender on who uses what, except possibly, on the material that is used to create that bag. They are even considered accessories to some, because of what can be placed inside these small purses, or pouches, or for the incredibly large bags.
Ladies make a statement of late, with the bags that they carry. Fashion is always at the height of what most women seem to think of when choosing a bag, should they go to the grocer, attend a function, be at the playground with their children. Some would even have different colored bags to go for a specific outfit, and yet some would contradict and say that bags are bags, as long as it can carry what needs to be brought for that trip.
